Savannah's Neighbors
Adding to Savannah's allure are the enticements of her neighbors — the South Carolina Lowcountry to the north and the Richmond Hill/Liberty County area and the Golden Isles to the south, each of which is worthy of a day trip from Georgia's First City.
Tybee Island – Savannah’s Beach
Sand, sea and salty breezes have a charm all their own, but when combined with a dash of history, fresh local cuisine and an array of outdoor adventures there’s a guaranteed draw to Tybee Island.
Tybee Island is located 20 minutes from Historic Savannah, Georgia's First City. This barrier island boasts 5 miles of beaches backed by sea oat-covered sand dunes that are perfect for sunbathing, people-watching and frolicking in the sand and surf of the Atlantic Ocean.
Tybee Island offers an assortment of activities for nature bound explorers; visitors can choose from boat cruises and fishing trips to kayaking, bike riding and bird watching through the surrounding Lowcountry. Tybee Marine Science Center offers beach walks and touch tanks to help us better understand the creatures of the sea. On warm days, dolphins can be seen playing from the shore or by
guided tour, much to the delight of kids of all ages.
After exploring the sites, take time to sample the famous
Lowcountry cuisine. Fresh bounties from the sea are prepared to
perfection by over 30 eclectic restaurants located on Tybee. Local
restaurants serve up delicious meals featuring Caribbean flare and
American favorites along with fresh local seafood such as crab,
oysters, shrimp and fish.
Beaufort & Hilton Head Island, SC
Within an hour's drive in South Carolina are the laidback old town of Beaufort, with its waterfront park, quaint downtown and historic district, and the upscale playground of Hilton Head Island, with its beaches and a world of prospects for golfing, tennis and shopping.
Richmond Hill & Liberty County
Historic sites abound in the Richmond Hill/Liberty County area, including: Fort McAllister, an earthen redoubt that was the scene of a short but fierce battle during the Civil War; the church, museum and cemetery at Midway, a town that dates to Colonial times; Fort Morris and the graveyard at the lost town of Sunbury; and Seabrook Village, which recreates the life and culture of African-American inhabitants of the region.
Golden Isles
The Golden Isles offer a combination of history and recreation. St. Simons Island is the site of Fort Frederica and the battleground of Bloody Marsh — two remnants of the Oglethorpe era — and Jekyll Island is the home of Millionaires' Village, an historic district featuring restored mansions and a hotel once owned by Northern industrialists. Both islands are renowned for their golf courses, and Jekyll also beckons with miles of beaches and the Summer Waves water park.
